OSI-Bolt®

Back to Fastener Specific Archive

The OSI-Bolt® represents a revolutionary advancement in fastening technology, offering unparalleled strength, reliability, and ease of installation. Designed as a direct replacement for traditional solid shank pin-and-collar systems, the OSI-Bolt® surpasses its predecessors in shear, tensile, and preload properties. Unlike two-piece fastening systems that require coordination between operators on opposing sides of a structure, the OSI-Bolt® can be installed entirely from one side, streamlining the installation process and reducing labor requirements.

Materials They Are Made Of

Crafted from premium materials, OSI-Bolts ensure exceptional strength and durability in aerospace environments. Options include:

  • A-286 Stainless Steel: Known for its high strength and corrosion resistance, A-286 stainless steel excels in high-temperature applications.
  • Inconel 718: This nickel-based superalloy offers excellent tensile and impact strength across a wide temperature range.
  • Titanium: Renowned for its high strength-to-weight ratio, titanium delivers significant weight savings without compromising durability

Standard Removal Process

The removal process of OSI-Bolts® involves careful and precise drilling, detaching the corebolt head, and utilizing end mill cutting and piloted rivet set methods to remove the remaining body component and shank portion, requiring precision and caution throughout. During the drilling process, it’s crucial to maintain perpendicularity to the work surface to prevent drifting and maintain centerline cutting. Pecking away at the fastener corebolt before applying full drilling force helps create a guide cavity and avoids drifting off-center. After drilling to the required depth, the corebolt head is detached, and the remaining shank is pushed out using a rivet set and hammer. The end mill cutting method is then used to remove the remaining body component, with moderate tool end pressure recommended for efficiency. Finally, the remaining shank portion is removed using a piloted rivet set, adjusting the power output of the utility hammer as needed. Despite these detailed instructions, pitfalls such as misdrilling, long process time, and potential damage remain, highlighting the need for precision and caution throughout the removal process.

However, with the introduction of E-Drill technology, the process has become faster and significantly reduces the potential for damage.

Advantages of E-Drill:

E-Drill employs advanced electrochemical machining techniques, allowing for quick removal of OSI-Bolts® made from various materials.

  • Reduce Damage: E-Drill minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures and components. Because the E-Drill process uses vacuum tooling combined with an undersized electrode designed to only touch the inner core bolt- the potential for misdrilling/damage to the structure is virtually eliminated.
  • Efficiency: E-Drill offers a faster, safer alternative to traditional methods, ensuring minimal disruption to aerospace operations.
    • Simply locate over the fastener using vacuum tooling, cut the core bolt using E-Drill in less than 10 seconds, punch the core-bolt through, then remove the remaining fastener body using the OSI puller. Watch the video for more information about this process.

OSI-Bolts® represent a significant advancement in aerospace fastening technology. With their superior strength, durability, and compatibility, coupled with the efficiency of E-Drill technology for removal, they are poised to revolutionize aerospace assembly and maintenance processes.
